Fireworks violators face hefty fines
San Marcos residents who use private fireworks on the holiday weekend will face fines up to $2,000 fine. San Marcos prohibits fireworks within and up to a mile from the city limits.
Triple digit heat predicted to stay through holiday weekend
The National Weather Service is predicting highs around 102 degrees, but it could feel as hot as 108, during the Independence Day weekend.
County to double Buda patrol unit
A rash of car burglaries in the Buda area has led the Hays County Sheriff’s Office to double its Buda patrol. Captain Bo Kidd (above) said the deputies are “desperately needed.”

Old Bastrop Highway to close for three months
Old Bastrop Highway (CR 266) will close for three months starting July 6, from the San Marcos River to Staples Road. The Hays County Road Department will reconstruct the road.

Reach Out and Read has come to San Marcos

Reach Out and Read (ROR for short) is a national early literacy program for children. It seeks to get kids comfortable with books between the ages of 6 months and 5 years, taking advantage of regularly scheduled well-child visits. The doctors offer parents advice about the importance of reading with their young children and they give the child a brand new book at every visit. The primary goal is to make books and reading part of a child’s health care and therefore a part of every childhood.
A book at every primary care visit from six months to five years means ten books in the home by the time a child starts school, and each comes with advice, guidance, and encouragement from the child’s medical advisor.
The books are free for the kids–the doctor donates his or her time and that of the staff to administer the program. The community is asked only to donate the books.
The Bluebonnet Lions Club of San Marcos has taken on the responsibility of letting the city know about ROR. It is doing this by raising money and by giving presentations about the program to other service organizations, university professors, classes, and civic leaders in the community.
