Building on what Ted and Janice said here ... we moved to San Marcos from Plano several months ago, and we are finding food and housing more expensive with less choice. Having said that, we love it here and we hope to see more food become available from area farmers, and we are cautiously optimistic that the right thing (for us) will open up on the housing front. And, if our new start-up business (Cleantegrity) grows like we expect it will, then we can (in the future) provide good-paying full-time jobs for the community.

I agree with Ted. I moved here a year and a half ago and did not realize it would be impossible to find a job that would replace 1/3 of my salary in Dallas. The cost of living is not much lower here but the job scene is terrible.

*Jobs* sure. When I was younger, that was one of the great things about San Marcos: you could always find a job. You still can.

Unfortunately, careers can be pretty hard to come by, although there are a few more than there were 15-20 years ago.

I worked at the outlet mall, years ago. It wasn't a bad job. It sure beat working as a lumper at the HEB Warehouse, for example.

Still, if I were to lose my job today, I wouldn't take much comfort in the fact that the Outlet Mall is hiring.

$10 per hour puts a single-income family just above the poverty level and gives a two-income family just about enough to cover living expenses here in San Marcos. I don't think most of the positions at the Outlet Mall even pay that much.

www.caction.org/basicneeds/issue_areas/PovertyFactSheet_2007.pdf

Of course, there are always ways to supplement things further, like getting a second job, or taking in a renter.

Still, the reality is that a seasonal position at the Outlet Mall (and many of them are seasonal, or were the last time I checked) is not the kind of "job growth" that we desperately need in San Marcos.

Overall, things in the Austin/San Antonio corridor look pretty good, especially if you are a tech worker. I recently heard that unemployment in the tech sector for the corridor is under 3%. Based on efforts to hire software developers, I can't say that I doubt the number.

If you love San Marcos, living here sometimes means an extra hour or two on the road every day and an extra $5,000 (and climbing) per year for gas. That's still better than some areas in California and the Northeast, but for many of us, it would be nice to work in San Marcos and even more so for many others who move away each year in search of careers.
