Council looks at loan for entertainment venue
The San Marcos City Council will consider $5 million in interest free loans to help a developer convert the largely abandoned Springtown Center into an entertainment district. Economic Development San Marcos (EDSM) Executive Director Amy Madison (above) would not reveal the board’s recommendation to council.

Fireworks violators face hefty fines
San Marcos residents who use private fireworks on the holiday weekend will face fines up to $2,000 fine. San Marcos prohibits fireworks within and up to a mile from the city limits.

Old Bastrop Highway to close for three months

Hazardous household waste drop-off set for Sunday

Do you have an old cell phone or a bin of oven cleaners, polishes or pool chemicals, and you don’t know what to do with them?
That becomes an easy problem to solve this coming Sunday, when local governments are sponsoring a drive-through household hazardous waste collection.
Hays County residents can take their old household poisons to the City of San Marcos traffic yard Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon. The traffic yard is located on East Hopkins Street across from the big H-E-B.
The cities of San Marcos and Kyle, along with Hays County, are sponsoring the collection, at which residents can drop off outdated toxic chemicals. Residents won’t have to leave their vehicles as they leave their outdated supplies. However, proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill, is required.
“We want to encourage our citizens to dispose of toxic materials properly,” said Jo Secrest, San Marcos Public Services Program Coordinator.
Residents are asked to transport chemicals in their car trunks and keep products in their original containers. If a container is broken, the contents should be placed in a container of the same material. The sponsors instruct that chemicals are not to be combined.
Materials that will be accepted include:
Cleaning products - Drain cleaners, concentrates, degreasers, oven cleaners, solvents, polishes, pool chemicals, and household batteries.
Paint products - Latex and oil based paints, spray paints, thinners, strippers, preservatives, brush cleaners, etc.
Gardening products - Pesticides, sprays, dusts, herbicides (weed killers) rat poisons, and insecticides.
Automotive products - Antifreeze, batteries, motor oil, oil filters, brake fluids, and transmission fluids.
Cell phones and rechargeable batteries also will be accepted. However, the sponsors said they can’t accept tires, electronic waste (computer products, televisions, etc.) containers larger than five gallons, medical wastes, empty containers, compressed gas cylinders or wastes generated by businesses.

I’m glad the city and county are taking this step. I would like to suggest that it would be more effective if they established other drop off times including weekdays.
