Ted, that is so true. There are so many better options out there, particularly with the hybrid grasses based on buffalo grass, that are not substantially more expensive. In fact, I bet the reduced water use compared to Swamp Grass generates a conservative return on investment of less than two years. We have buffalo grass that we never water. If we don't get rain, then it is brown and dormant. The second it rains though, it greens right up. There's nothing wrong letting your yard turn brown & dormant during the summer months. We're saving up for a new metal roof on the house. When we do that, we plan to install a 750-1,000 gallon rainwater collection tank to handle all of our outside water needs (veggie garden, maybe the grass when it gets really dry; the rest is xerics that can handle the dry pretty well).

If there was never another house built with a St. Augustine lawn, that would be awesome, IMHO. Talk about something with no business in central Texas.

Have to disagree with you on this Portable Toilets.

In my neighborhood, it is the transplants (including me) who are working hard to replace these horrible water hogging lawns planted in the 60's (by Texans, I presume) with native, drought tolerant plants and grasses.

I do agree with you that restrictions should be revised to be much more stringent - and then MUST be enforced.

Don't be fooled by recent rains. They didn't begin to touch the aquifer. Spring discharge levels are extremely low, and it will take a long while of steady rain to bring them up again.

The problem is transplants that grow non-native plants, flowers and crops.

Restrictions need revamping and enforcing.

We have reached a time where we begin to see the results of our actions. Obviously we aren't to fault for drought conditions, but we certainly are to blame for the perilous condition that we now find ourselves in. Urban sprawl, poor planning and exploitation of our waters has come back to haunt us. I urge everyone to do what they can to help conserve water until this crisis is over. Don't wait, do your part today!

Some growth in San Marcos is naturally curtailed due to the higher costs to live and work here. For example, compared to a number of other Texas cities, from the home perspective we have higher taxes, water costs, and grocery bills. At the business level, we have higher telecommunication costs. We love San Marcos and we are confident this is the place to be for us, but we also recognize and feel the higher expenses every month (compared to the most recent 16 years in Plano preceding our move to San Marcos).

Great! Why is it that with all that is studied and documented as above, does this city and others, continue to keep building like crazy? Who stands to gain? Look I'm all for progress but this....well this is just sad. San Marcos needs to cap some of this "progress". I love my sanctuary-my home- and just because San Marcos wants all this "progress" I have to let my sanctuary dry and wither away. That's just wrong!
