John and Dano,

Obviously, pumping from the river in Martindale does not affect the springflow from the San Marcos Springs. It does, however affect the streamflow in the San Marcos River downstream of the diversion point and it does affect the instream flows into the San Antonio Bay.

Our point is that we are telling the folks in San Antonio to conserve water (by turning off the water while they brush their teeth and by letting their lawns die) so the San Marcos Springs can continue to flow. Obviously, the San Marcos Springs are dramatically affected by what happens to the aquifer upstream of San Marcos. And, one of the reasons that we ask San Antonians to conserve water is to save the Whooping Cranes (who depend on those instream flows into San Antonio Bay). But, what the state is doing is allowing all this water that has been conserved to be used to fill private lakes so rich folks can waterski.

But the diversion of water downstream of the San Marcos Springs does not affect those springs.

Hope this helps.

I'm curious too, John.

Ignorant though I may be about the way such things work, it would seem to me that nothing that happens downstream would affect the amount of water that the springs generate at the head of the river. I would think that downstream pumping would only affect those further downstream.

Are you telling me that the springs somehow 'sense' low water miles downstream and pump harder to compensate? That seems to be a tough concept for me to wrap my head around.

Dianne,
Can you explain for the lay person how downstream pumping effects spring flow? You coulnd't hear my tone of voice when I asked that, but it was genuinely intrigued without any tone of agenda.

It is important for those of you who feel strongly about this situation to talk to your elected officials, especially state representatives and senators, every time you get a chance. The coming couple of years are going to be crucial in the effort to keep Texas rivers flowing. If your elected officials know it is an important issue to a lot of you, they will pay more attention when the Bay/Basin Stakeholder process reports back to them.

[...] News reports also noted that drought conditions are underway across much of Texas, and this has been a factor in concerns as well. [...]

Of course it does no good to complain but it is so fustrating that no one can do anything to stop this. It is an outrage that someone is allowed to pump water out of the San Marcos River for a ski lake. If they want to ski live on one of the already established lakes. Don't try and make millions of dollars off of our beautiful natural river and destory it in the process. So much for the natural springs at this rate they will stop flowing and we will be left with nothing but a dry hole.

These are the kinds of stories that make you sick. Why do any of us really care about our local communities if you disqusting fools and smiling villains are going to destroy it over and over again. And instead of ever actually fixing a problem, you blame the "other side" whoever that may be at the time, and do the same d*** thing again but with a twist so that the PR won't expose your corrupt reality. The criminality of those in power is cyclical... their existence is a threat to the rest of our humanity. Just wait until Austin and San Antonio's city limits reach one another. Get out of the area while you can, overpopulation is cultivating this regions demise and those in power are worried about their checkbooks and egos, little else.
