Ballet thrives in San Marcos

San Marcos is famous for music, a gorgeous river, an esteemed university and ballet. Ballet? Oh yes, the San Marcos-based River City Ballet and The Pointe Dance Studio are making waves in the dance world.



The Weekend: Nuthin’ weak about this one

From menudo to Sousa to Mariachi to disc golf to theater to ballet to soapbox derby, there’s enough stuff to do this weekend that you’ll need a big healing bowl of the Mexican soup to soothe you. Is there music? This is San Marcos, isn’t it?



River City ballet to present ‘Graduation Ball’

The River City Ballet’s performance of “Graduation Ball” will feature the talents of several dancers from San Marcos High School, Owen Goodnight Middle School, Miller Middle School, Texas State students and other local area dance students. The performance is on May 1 at EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens in Wimberley.



The Weekend: A whole messtival of festivals, and a good bit else, besides

Festivals, fairs and shows. The weekend is stuffed to bursting with them. And then, there’s more good music than you can shake a stick at, if you had a stick you wanted to shake at something.



Texas State puts on ‘The Servant of Two Masters’

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas State is putting on “The Servant of Two Masters” through Sunday at the Theatre Center. The play is about a mischievous servant who decides that two paydays are better than one.



Great Books discussion group tackles Borges

The Great Books Discussion Group, meeting at the San Marcos Public Library on April 19, will discuss “The Garden of the Forking Paths” by Jorge Luis Borges.



Library to feature puppet show

The San Marcos Public Library’s puppeteers will present a show featuring two well-loved books by Eric Carle, Little Cloud and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The shows are on Tuesday and Friday.



‘Showcase’ gives Texas State dance students experience

The “Choreographers’ Showcase” at Texas State later this month gives dance students will include 11 dances representing a variety of styles and techniques as students gain experience in the process of selecting accompaniment, costumes and lighting design



¡Viva México! opens at Wittliff Collections

The Wittliff Collections at Texas State have opened a new photo exhibit, ¡Viva México!, in recognition of the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s declaration of independence from Spain and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. The exhibit will run through July 31.



Texas State to present ‘Dead Man’s Cell Phone’

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas State will present “Dead Man’s Cell Phone” next week. It’s the story of a woman whose compulsion to answer a dead man’s incessantly ringing cell phone forces her to address questions of her own morality.
