City announces Sept. 11 ceremony

The City of San Marcos has announced a September 11 remembrance ceremony in front of San Marcos City Hall at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. The ceremony will honor the lives lost in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.



Riverside Drive closure highlights city street projects

San Marcos officials have announced the street closures affecting traffic for the week of Sept. 5-11. The big one is happening on Riverside Drive, which will be closed north of Cheatham Street for more than a month while the city installs water lines as part of the Rio Vista Terrace improvements project.



Keep San Marcos Beautiful plans art and eco fest

The first annual Keep San Marcos Beautiful Art and Eco Fest will be held in downtown San Marcos on Sept. 25. The event is geared to displaying the city’s unique beauty while promoting litter prevention, waste reduction, education and beautification.



Pet Fest slated for September 25

Prevent a Litter (PALS) of Central Texas will hold its eighth annual Pet Fest on Sept. 25 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at San Marcos Plaza Park, 401 East Hopkins Street. The theme for the festival is “PALS Cares – we’re helping people fix their pets.”



San Marcos Public Library celebrates 150,000th book

The Encyclopedia of Texas Seashells, published by Texas A&M Press, has the honor of being the 150,000th book attained by the San Marcos Public Library.



City announces another week of road work

Not much new on the road repair scene in San Marcos this week, unless you’re driving through Rio Vista Terrace. Starting Monday, Cheatham Street from East Hopkins Street to Rio Vista Street will be closed during day hours for nearly three weeks.



Meeting on Village Main building slated for September

A meeting on Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 East Hopkins Street, will present the architectural plans for the Village Main building on the Village campus in San Marcos. Stakeholders are invited to attend the meeting.



City crews clean up after windstorm

San Marcos emergency and utility crews were busy Tuesday night and Wednesday after straight line winds and a sudden storm uprooted trees, broke off tree limbs, damaged structures and caused power outages across the city. About 600 customers lost power for up to four hours.



City offers hazardous household waste disposal twice per week

The City of San Marcos has contracted with Guy Guy recycling for two part time employees to operate the household hazardous waste (HHW) collection facility at the city’s traffic yard, 630 East Hopkins Street on Tuesday and Friday afternoons.



High winds knock down two dozen trees in Westover

Winds of up to 45 MPH reached the west side of San Marcos Tuesday, knocking down between 25 and 30 trees while taking down power lines. City officials will assess the damage Wednesday.
