Windemere developers cut plan to 75 dwellings

The developers of a residential project at the head waters of the San Marcos Springs reduced their proposal this week after the city refused to condemn an adjoining strip of land for a road. The owner of that land, Paul Geiger, said he opposes the Windemere Ranch development.



San Marcos to raise utility rates in 2011 to meet costs

San Marcos city councilmembers have agreed during the budget process to raise rates for its water, wastewater, electric and garbage pick-up customers. Though the new water rates are yet to be decided, the city already charges among the highest rates in Texas among cities of its size.



Shafer surprises trustees with resignation as school district superintendent

San Marcos CISD Superintendent Patty Shafer tendered a surprise resignation Monday night. School trustees said they were shocked, but voted to accept her resignation. Shafer said she needs to address family matters.



P&Z approves conditional use permit for AA house

San Marcos Planning and Zoning commissioners again went against the city staff recommendation corning the Last House on the Block, a house on Smith Lane being used as a meeting place for Alcoholics Anonymous. The commission agreed to issue a one-year conditional use permit.



County court lowers proposed tax rate hike

After first looking at a property tax rate hike of nearly 1.5 cents, the Hays County commissioners agreed last week to propose a property tax rate of 47.39 cents, less than a half-penny higher than the current rate of 46.92 cents.

Commissioners consider $31M in county jail repair

Hays County commissioners paid $2 million for emergency repairs for the air conditioner at the Hays County Jail this week, and now are looking at more than $30 million in improvements to the jail.



County gives $150K for regional economic plan

Seeking $800,000 for its first year of operations, the Greater San Marcos Economic Development Corporation (GSMEDC) received $150,000 this week from Hays County. GSMEDC is hoping to receive another $360,000 from the City of San Marcos next month.



Mayor: City looking for new plan to water golf course at Paso Robles

At a special meeting of the San Marcos City Council Tuesday night, Mayor Susan Narvaiz and Carma Texas General Manager Shaun Cranston said they would look into alternatives to reclaimed water for a golf course within the proposed Paso Robles development.



San Marcos CISD takes steps to start orchestra

San Marcos CISD trustees could launch an orchestra program for middle school and high school students as soon as next year. As a start, trustees agreed last week to give the San Marcos Artist Retention and Training (SMART) Orchestra free practice space for teaching students.
