City growth adds costs to smart metering project

The San Marcos City Council voted to approve the payment of more than $500,000 last month for its smart metering initiative, but not before a couple councilmembers asked in detail why the payment was necessary.



City outbids private buyer for low-income home

The San Marcos City Council agreed last week to use a federal program to buy two homes for availability to low-income buyers. In one case, the city paid $4,200 more than the asking price, outbidding a private buyer.



West Point nominee honored

San Marcos High School student Aidan Dietz was recently honored for his nomination to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Dietz, a senior at SMHS, was nominated by U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett.



Second crack yields $610K apartment incentive

San Marcos Councilmember Chris Jones decided to vote Tuesday after his February abstention deadlocked a $610,000 incentive package for an apartment complex on the edge of downtown. Jones voted for the incentives, which passed by a 4-3 vote.



DeZavala and Bowie honored for achievments

Bowie and DeZavala Elementary Schools were recently honored by the San Marcos City Council for their achievements. Both schools were honored by the No Child Left Behind program, among their laurels.



SMHS junior Stonecipher honored by city

San Marcos High School junior Ty Stonecipher, who was accepted at NASA’s high school scholars program, was recently honored by the city.



SMHS principal honored for NCEA listing

The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA) Just for the Kids campaign recognized San Marcos High School (SMHS) for the advances it made in social studies education. The San Marcos City Council recently honored SMHS principal Michelle Darling for the achievement.



Chargers honored by city council

The San Marcos Chargers were recently honored by the the San Marcos City Council for their winning seasons of soccer. The Chargers are a girls 12-and-under team that finished third in Texas in 2008 and 2009, competing out of the San Marcos Area Youth Soccer Organization.



Council to take second look at $610K apartment grant

The San Marcos City Council will reconsider a $610,000 property tax rebate for a developer who wants to place a multi-family residential complex on the west side of downtown. The council deadlocked, 3-3, on the issue last week.



February proclaimed Texas Round-Up Month

San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz and the city council proclaimed February Texas Round-Up month, promoting the statewide GetFitTexas and FitKids programs.
