Springtown to get talk, but no action at Tuesday city council meeting

In a change of plan, the San Marcos City Council will discuss the latest on a possible re-development deal for Springtown Mall Tuesday night, but no action will be taken.



City outbids private buyer for low-income home

The San Marcos City Council agreed last week to use a federal program to buy two homes for availability to low-income buyers. In one case, the city paid $4,200 more than the asking price, outbidding a private buyer.



San Marcos council approves new complaint process

The San Marcos City Council approved revisions to the city’s complaint process saying complaints against the city can’t be filed within 60 says of early voting for a city election. San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz said the process could otherwise be used as a political tool.



Second crack yields $610K apartment incentive

San Marcos Councilmember Chris Jones decided to vote Tuesday after his February abstention deadlocked a $610,000 incentive package for an apartment complex on the edge of downtown. Jones voted for the incentives, which passed by a 4-3 vote.



Springtown Mall proposal remains in negotiations

The amounts and the recipients for a proposed Springtown Mall incentive from the city have changed, but San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz said the city would no longer be out money up front and the goal remains of rescuing Springtown from blight.

San Marcos city officials are close to making pet microchipping the law in some cases. An amended animal control ordinance with microchip provisions goes before the city council Tuesday night for a second and final reading.



Former Councilmember Earl Moseley dead at 48

Earl Moseley, well known at Texas State and around San Marcos, succumbed to pancreatic cancer early Thursday evening in San Antonio. Moseley served a term on the San Marcos City Council 10 years ago.



Council to take second look at $610K apartment grant

The San Marcos City Council will reconsider a $610,000 property tax rebate for a developer who wants to place a multi-family residential complex on the west side of downtown. The council deadlocked, 3-3, on the issue last week.



Slowly, city approaches downtown streetscaping

A downtown San Marcos streetscaping project, which still needs to be fully funded, would begin in combination with a drainage project on Hutchison Street and North LBJ Drive. The project will reduce parking spaces while widening and beautifying sidewalks.



San Marcos council tables Alamo theater incentive

The San Marcos City Council tabled a $2.5 million “grant” Tuesday night for an Alamo Drafthouse to occupy the vacant Best Buy building at Springtown Mall. San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz said the tabling was necessary because background agenda information about the proposal wasn’t soon enough available to residents.
