New fire station could break furniture budget

On the heels of a downward sales tax intake for the seventh straight month, the San Marcos City Council approved over $50,000 in expenditures to furnish the new San Marcos Fire Department (SMFD) station, and SMFD Chief Les Stephens said more money will be needed for more furniture.



Fire destroys midtown feed store, pet shop

Fire destroyed the Amkon General Store and the Critter Shop, both housed in the same aged building on LBJ Drive just north of Cheatham Street. An “all call” went out to area firefighters at about 2 p.m. Sunday as smoke billowed high into the sky. San Marcos city spokesperson Melissa Millecam said the fire started on the south end of the building and spread to the rest of the building through the roof.



Council waits on campaign finance limits

The San Marcos City Council declined once again to take up campaign finance limitations last week. However, the council made numerous appointments to most boards and commissions they didn’t sunset at the same meeting.



Fireworks violators face hefty fines

San Marcos residents who use private fireworks on the holiday weekend will face fines up to $2,000 fine. San Marcos prohibits fireworks within and up to a mile from the city limits.
