The Weekend: Green, musical and fun, like a leprechaun

The weekend in San Marcos is never at a loss for music, particularly at the end of a week when we lost a largely unsung hero of popular music.



Shooting task force throws gauntlet at court

A county-appointed task force charged with locating a parcel for a shooting sports complex has put forth an open records request to learn of the parcels under consideration for wildlife conservation habitat. The shooting sports task force hopes to co-locate a facility with habitat conservation land, saying no other funds are available for purchasing land.



Spring Lake water protection moves forward

Three local entities — San Marcos, Hays County and Texas State — recently formalized their intention to cooperate on a protection plan for the Upper San Marcos Watershed, including Spring Lake. Texas State River Systems Institute (RSI) Program Manager Eric Mendelman said it is too early to precisely determine the nature and scope of the watershed protection plan.

We’re not crowning a mud queen or tattooing Ringo Starr on our arms, but San Marcos still makes a mark with music and ice cream this weekend.

Traditionally, the nation founders in the doldrums of January. The post-Christmas letdown sinks in and the days look a bit bleak and less than festive. Well, they do in most of America. But not here around San Marcos, where, even if the weather’s a bit chilly, the sun still shines with its golden Texas magic. And then, there’s Spindletop Day.

County greenprint map completed

Hays County’s $50,000 contribution in 2008 to the Central Texas Greenprint for Growth project bore fruit last month in the form of interactive Geographic Information System (GIS) maps depicting the region’s land conservation priorities.



Naturescapes contest awards ceremony announced

The winner of the fifth annual Naturescapes photo contest will be announced at a ceremony on Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 East Hopkins Street. The contest, which emphasizes photographs of the natural beauty of Hays County, is co-sponsored by the San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance and the Hill Country Photography Club.



The Weekend: Try Kool-Aid and shade

The hot weather might be a prompt to try remembering what made summer fun as a kid. Stuff like Kool-Aid, barbecue, shade and flashlight tag. Then, maybe, snap into grown-up mode and see some live music, or you can go to another big night of races Saturday night at Thunderhill Raceway in Kyle (above).



The Weekend: Cheers for Cinco de Mayo

Comes now, the weekend of numerous Cinco de Mayo celebrations, along with Pete Seeger’s birthday and the usual gamut of live music and entertainment in San Marcos.
