City announces road work for week

The City of San Marcos has announced road projects that will affect traffic in town for the next week. Among the streets involved in the projects are Hopkins Street, Sessom Drive, Craddock Avenue and Wonder World Drive.



Windemere Ranch could go to habitat — or development

The owners of Windemere Ranch property say they’re going ahead with their plans for development, but Hays County could have designs on the land for its regional habitat conservation plan to protect the golden-cheeked warbler and the black-capped vireo.

Spring Lake water protection moves forward

Three local entities — San Marcos, Hays County and Texas State — recently formalized their intention to cooperate on a protection plan for the Upper San Marcos Watershed, including Spring Lake. Texas State River Systems Institute (RSI) Program Manager Eric Mendelman said it is too early to precisely determine the nature and scope of the watershed protection plan.



Fire destroys midtown feed store, pet shop

Fire destroyed the Amkon General Store and the Critter Shop, both housed in the same aged building on LBJ Drive just north of Cheatham Street. An “all call” went out to area firefighters at about 2 p.m. Sunday as smoke billowed high into the sky. San Marcos city spokesperson Melissa Millecam said the fire started on the south end of the building and spread to the rest of the building through the roof.



State planning could close river for rec use

The decline of Texas Wild Rice, which grows naturally only in the San Marcos River, could motivate state aquifer protection planners to pressure the city into closing parts of the river for recreational uses.



San Marcos recognized by BusinessWeek

San Marcos received a notice to which it is not accustomed this week, when BusinessWeek named the city as the Texas winner in its “Best Places to Raise Your Kids: 2010″ survey.



Deputies save woman, arrest her for DWI

Hays County deputies and firefighters rescued a woman from a car that was overturned in water early last Saturday morning, then arrested her for driving while intoxicated (DWI).



Martindale development spurs water protests

Two river protection organizations and residents of three local counties are protesting a developer’s pumping of San Marcos River water during drought conditions for a future private lake community near Martindale.
