Buda man gets 25 years for car theft with air gun

A Buda man is going to prison for 25 years after using an air gun to steal a woman’s car in the Prime Outlet Mall parking lot last year.



Rose endorses Barton in county judge primary

State Representative Patrick Rose (D-Dripping Springs) said Saturday that he is endorsing Hays County Precinct 2 Commissioner Jeff Barton (D-Kyle) in a party primary race against incumbent Hays County Judge Liz Sumter (D-Wimberley). Rose said Barton “is more able to unite the (commissioners) court,” the divisions of which precipitated the primary struggle.



County jury gives Reyes life without parole

A Hays County jury sentenced San Marcos resident Roger Reyes, 40, to life in prison without possibility of parole after convicting him this week of continuous sexual abuse of a young child.



Luling teen faces three murder charges

The Luling teenager who left the scene of a botched marijuana heist and returned after all the shots had been fired now faces three counts of murder. A Hays County District grand jury has indicted Frank Castro, 18, for one count of capital murder, two counts of felony murder and one count of aggravated robbery.



Williams suspends ‘just a dog’ officer

San Marcos Police Chief Howard Williams has suspended the officer who brought national attention to the city in August 2008 after telling a couple rushing their dying poodle to a veternarian that their pet was “just a dog” during a traffic stop. Williams suspended Officer Paul Stephens last month, citing a pattern of dishonest behavior after an incident at Dillinger’s on the courthouse square.



DA’s office cleared in Shipman case

A state district court has found the Hays County District Attorney’s office free of impropriety in the case involving Shawn Nathan Shipman after a Writ of Habeas Corpus was denied in July and Shipman subsequently entered a guilty plea on Aug. 14.



San Marcos man gets 80 years

Oscar Lopez of San Marcos is going to prison for 80 years after police caught him selling drugs on Gavel Street.



Buda man gets 45 years in robbery

A Buda man was sentenced to 45 years and a $10,000 fine for the aggravated robbery of a convenience story in Buda.



Shipman writ denied, new trial to proceed

The convoluted case of Shawn Nathan Shipman took another turn last week, when District Judge James F. Clawson Jr. denied Shipman’s Writ of Habeas Corpus. As a result, Shipman’s retrial will take place later this month. Shipman was granted a retrial after an assistant Hays County District Attorney alleged improprieties in his prosecution earlier this year.



County awards pact for juvy building

Hays County commissioners addressed one criminal justice need this week, awarding a contract for the construction of a new building to house juvenile detention offices and GED classrooms.
