City growth adds costs to smart metering project

The San Marcos City Council voted to approve the payment of more than $500,000 last month for its smart metering initiative, but not before a couple councilmembers asked in detail why the payment was necessary.



Secrest honored by city

City of San Marcos Public Services Coordinator Jo Secrest was recognized by the city for her recent honors from the San Marcos River Foundation. The river foundation honored Secrest for coordinating hazardous waste collection in the city.



City clears well of E. coli

San Marcos water officials have cleared a city well of E. coli. The well will be back in operation Wednesday. City officials found E. coli in the well on Feb. 26 and shut the well down.

San Marcos water officials have tested one city well positive for E. coli. The well has been taken down so water quality can be restored. No E. coli has been found in the samples of city water distributed as potable water.



City expands efficiency rebate programs

San Marcos officials plan to step up their water and electricity conservation efforts this year by giving more appliances and money to qualifying residents willing to swap out their less-efficient devices. In 2010, for the first time, the city will offer year-long electric appliance rebate and replacement programs.



State planning could close river for rec use

The decline of Texas Wild Rice, which grows naturally only in the San Marcos River, could motivate state aquifer protection planners to pressure the city into closing parts of the river for recreational uses.



Mayor honors youth advocate, proclaims power week

Police Officer Danny Arrendondo was recognized as the Youth Advocate of the Month. Mayor Susan Narvaiz also proclaimed “Public Power Week.”



City says water supply good until 2070

City officials believe San Marcos has secured water supplies to last until 2070 after reports from the city’s efficiency task force and McLain Decision Support System on water and wastewater utilities.



City lifts Stage 2 drought restrictions

The City of San Marcos lifted its Stage 2 drought restrictions Tuesday after several periods of significant rainfall that have relieved severe drought conditions. The city now moves down to Stage 1 restrictions.



Council approves watering day option

The San Marcos City Council approved a watering day option for city residents Tuesday, though Councilmember Fred Terry didn’t seem sure why he put the matter back up for consideration.
